Song Of The Day No.44

Just Kissed My Baby

by The Meters (Rejuvenation, 1974)

It can be no coincidence that The Meters formed in 1965, the same year that James Brown released his funk-pioneering hit 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag'. The now legendary funk band originally started as Allen Toussaint's backing band, eventually releasing their self-titled debut in 1969. An album followed every year or two after that at the same time as they continued their session work meaning the group were kept busy honing their musicianship with the likes of Dr John, Paul McCartney and LaBelle.

Processed guitar fidgets in a typically funk vane while the drums offer some steadily stuttering guidance that masks it's complexity well. The first line announces in it's simplicity “I feel like a king, 'cause I just kissed my baby” and the lyrics follow in a similar catchy fashion. The bass guitar is typically assertive in it's slow-fast walking rhythms as is the brass section when it parps contently at the good vibes emanating from the song. An organ and another guitar subtly add a couple more layers to round off this vivacious funk classic.
