Song Of The Day No.6

Song For Weddings And Funerals

by Schwervon! (Call It What You Want – This Is Antifolk, 2002)

Bit of a random one this one, this song is off a compilation album that I got shipped across the Atlantic from Olive Juice Music in New York City. I've looked to see if this song is also available on one of the four studio albums that the band have released but it isn't. Olive Juice are a humble set up but have associates like Adam Green, Kimya Dawson and Jeffrey Lewis to help spread the word.

This track is lo-fi and low key in equal measures. Matt Roth first, then Nan Turner sing in a steady, droney tone making sure not to quicken the pulse. While underneath, gentle one way strumming and a slow, humming organ meander through some chords and notes as though they have all the time in the world. A satisfyingly calming song showing the more tender side to the often shouty and jokey genre of antifolk.
